the crag story

The Canal Reserve Action Group was first formed in 1994 to spearhead the community campaign to have the Lower Prospect Canal Reserve created. That successful campaign is documented on our Save the Canal web page.

CRAG has now taken on the role of guardian of the Lower Prospect Canal Reserve as it has become obvious that the government has not adequately protected the reserve for the community as demonstrated by the destruction of a section of the reserve for the Prospect Highway.

CRAG is run purely by community members who volunteer their time, and much of their own funds, to protect this valuable community asset. We welcome new members, and encourage everyone who uses the reserve to attend a CRAG meeting. We also encourage donations from everyone who benefits from the reserve to help us to continue to operate.

Since 1994 CRAG has been involved in numerous community activities. Here is a sample of the activities.

Various certificates for CRAG's participation.

The Canal Reserve was one of the most successful Cleanup Australia sites in the Holroyd City area.

CRAG had two representatives on the Boral Community Advisory Group (CAG) to ensure that the residential development at Pemulwuy did not compromise the Canal Reserve. Unfortunately, Boral did not form a CAG for the employment precinct which has now seen a section of the reserve destroyed and prompted CRAG to reform.

CRAG is a member of Landcare Australia.

A number of CRAG members have participated in bush regeneration training.

CRAG has been a contributor to Holroyd City Council's (now Cumberland Council) State of the Environment report on multiple occasions.

On August 28, 2003 CRAG was announced the joint winner of the 2003 Keep Australia Beautiful Metro Pride Overall Award for its efforts in saving the Lower Prospect Canal Reserve. For more information click here.
